How the NWC Water Tariff Works in 2026

The National Water Company (NWC) applies a four-block residential tariff in 2026. Block-pricing means each cubic metre is charged at a different rate depending on which consumption bracket it falls into. The bands are:

A sewerage charge equal to 50% of the water charge is also added. Then 15% VAT is applied to the total. Commercial properties have a flat SAR 9 per m³ rate plus the sewerage charge and VAT.

Worked Example

A family of four in Jeddah using 35 m³ in a month:

• Block 1 (0–15 m³): 15 × SAR 0.10 = SAR 1.50
• Block 2 (16–30 m³): 15 × SAR 1.00 = SAR 15.00
• Block 3 (31–35 m³): 5 × SAR 3.00 = SAR 15.00
• Water subtotal = SAR 31.50
• Sewerage (50%) = SAR 15.75
• Before VAT = SAR 47.25
• VAT 15% = SAR 7.09
• Total bill = SAR 54.34

How to Reduce Your NWC Water Bill

• A leaking toilet flapper wastes ~200 litres/day — fix it and save up to SAR 50/month.

• Run washing machines and dishwashers only when full.
• Use drip irrigation rather than sprinklers for the garden — 60% less water.

How NWC Water Billing Tiers Work

National Water Company (NWC) bills residential water in progressive consumption blocks — the more you use, the higher the price per cubic metre. The first block (up to 15 m³ per month) is the cheapest; consumption above 30 m³ falls into the highest residential block. Sewerage service, where connected, is charged as a percentage of the water consumption value, and 15% VAT applies to the total.

Because the tariff is progressive, a small reduction in daily use can move part of your consumption back into a cheaper block. A family using 32 m³ pays noticeably more per unit on the last 2 m³ than on the first 15 m³.

Detecting Leaks Before They Reach Your Bill

A hidden leak is the most common reason for a sudden spike in a Saudi water bill. To check: close every tap and water outlet in the property, then watch the meter dial for five minutes. If it moves, water is escaping somewhere — usually a roof-tank float valve, a toilet cistern, or an underground line between the meter and the house.

• Roof tank overflow — a stuck float valve can waste several cubic metres per day through the overflow pipe.
• Toilet cisterns — add food colouring to the cistern; if colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking.
• Underground lines — look for damp patches in the yard or an unusually green strip of plants.

Paying and Disputing an NWC Bill

Bills can be paid through the NWC e-branch (nwc.com.sa), the NWC mobile app, or SADAD through any Saudi bank. If you believe a bill is wrong, submit a meter-reading objection through the app with a photo of the meter. NWC also offers instalment plans for accumulated high bills in some cases — ask at a customer care branch.
