❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many annual leave days do I get in Saudi Arabia?
21 days per year for the first 5 years of service. After completing 5 years with the same employer, it increases to 30 days per year. These are calendar days excluding weekends — the actual days off depend on your work week structure.
Can my employer refuse to give me annual leave?
Your employer can schedule leave dates to suit operational needs but cannot deny you leave altogether. Leave must be given within 12 months of earning it. If not given, it must be paid out (leave encashment).
Do weekends count as annual leave days in Saudi Arabia?
No. Weekends (Friday–Saturday for most companies) and public holidays are NOT counted as leave days under Saudi Labour Law. Only actual working days are deducted from your leave balance.
How is sick leave paid in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Labour Law provides 120 days sick leave per year: first 30 days at full pay, next 60 days at half pay, and final 30 days unpaid. A medical certificate from a recognised health facility is required. Sick leave cannot be deducted from annual leave.
Can I get my unused annual leave paid out when I resign?
Yes. Any accrued but unused annual leave must be paid out (encashed) at your daily salary rate when you leave, whether you resign or are terminated. The daily rate is based on your full salary (basic + housing + transport).
Does maternity leave apply to expat women in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Maternity leave applies equally to Saudi nationals and expat female employees. All women employed in Saudi Arabia under a formal employment contract are entitled to 10 weeks maternity leave at full pay, regardless of nationality.
